By not playing too many hands and chasing unnecessary draws, you can establish a strong base for a deep run

In the early rounds of a poker tournament, many players make mistakes due to excitement, inexperience, or an incorrect approach to strategy. Avoiding these common errors can help you build a solid foundation as the tournament progresses and increase your chances of advancing to later stages.

One of the most frequent mistakes is playing too many hands. At the beginning of a tournament, the blinds are low, and there’s plenty of time to be selective. Many players, however, get too eager and play hands they shouldn’t, like weak suited connectors or low pairs, hoping for a big win.

Instead, focus on playing tight and selecting hands with better potential. A solid starting hand range, such as high pairs (Aces, Kings), or high suited cards (Ace-King, King-Queen), can keep you out of trouble and preserve your stack.

Another mistake is overvaluing hands, especially in multi-way pots. Just because you hit a decent hand doesn’t mean you should commit a large portion of your stack to it. In the early rounds, players are often still finding their rhythm, and betting too aggressively with marginal hands can lead to losing big pots. For example, overcommitting with top pair on a board that could easily connect with your opponents’ hands can be dangerous.

Chasing draws is another error common in early tournament stages. While drawing hands can be profitable in the long run, chasing them too aggressively early on is risky, especially with no proper pot odds. If the bet sizes are too large or your stack is not deep enough, folding when you miss the draw is often the smarter option.

Finally, many players make the mistake of neglecting position. Playing out of position in early rounds is particularly costly because it’s harder to control the pot and gather information. Stick to solid play from early and middle positions, and be more aggressive when you’re in later positions, where you can better see how your opponents act.
