Creating a Balanced Ranging Strategy for Heads-up Play

A solid foundation begins with opening nearly all hands from the button, while still preserving balance. Mixing strong holdings with weaker ones prevents opponents from exploiting predictability. The goal is not to play everything aggressively, but to vary your approach so patterns are harder to detect.

Preflop balance also depends on defending the big blind correctly. Folding too often gives away equity, while defending too loosely creates postflop trouble. Using mixed strategies—calling some hands, three-betting others—keeps your range protected across different board textures.

Postflop play is where range balance matters most. Continuation betting should include value hands and selected bluffs that benefit from fold equity. If you only bet when strong, observant opponents will adjust quickly and apply pressure whenever you check.

Choosing the right bluff candidates is key. Hands with backdoor draws, blockers, or future improvement potential fit naturally into betting ranges. These hands allow you to apply pressure without overcommitting chips in low-equity situations.

Checking ranges should also remain protected. Including strong hands when you check prevents opponents from attacking every time you show weakness. This balance allows you to induce bluffs and control pot size when stack depth matters.

Adapting ranges based on stack sizes is critical in heads-up formats. Deeper stacks favor more postflop maneuvering, while shorter stacks reward direct, simplified strategies. Balanced players adjust frequencies rather than abandoning structure.

Opponent tendencies help fine-tune balance but should not replace it. Exploiting mistakes is important, yet abandoning solid ranges entirely can backfire. Strong heads-up players exploit selectively while keeping their core strategy intact.
