So You Didn’t Make It To The WSOP – 4 Tips To Get There Next Year

If you’re a poker player during summertime, you experience only one of two realities: you’re either at the WSOP in Vegas living out the dream, or sitting at home compulsively refreshing updates on X/Twitter wishing you were there.

If you’re in the second group, here are 4 tips that will help change your fortunes.

  1. Set your intention and devise a plan now

You know the surge of excitement and slight jealousy you feel every time you read about some amateur player taking down a WSOP bracelet? Make sure to store that away deep inside you for the long year ahead and then get to work making sure you might be next. The best place to begin is by setting concrete intention of what you’d like to achieve. For example, I want to play a minimum of 2 bracelet events at the 2025 World Series of Poker. Once you have that, figure out what it would take to accomplish it – how much will it cost, how can you take time off from work, what kind of support do you need at home to make it happen – and then write it all down.

But don’t stop there; break down your plan into 11 monthly chunks, setting a mini goal for each one that will help get you there. If money is the issue, how can you begin building the required bankroll now? Can you take on an extra shift at work every week? Can you eat out once or twice less per month? Do you have any subscriptions you can live without? Once you know your monthly target, go through your life with a fine-tooth comb and find a way to chip away at your ultimate goal.

  1. Spend a year in obsessive self-improvement

After all, what’s the point of making it all the way to the WSOP only to punt it off in a spot you’re unsure about? Instead, begin the process of manifesting your desired reality in the way true manifesting works – by keeping a goal in mind and doing the hard work. Whether you want to join a training site, work with a coach, or even just watch more final tables trying to reverse engineer why the top players do what they do, the important thing is that you put as much effort in as possible and lock in early so that when those big decision points come on the way to accomplishing your dream, it will be infinitely more likely it’ll be a spot you’ve seen (and thought about) before.

  1. Play (other) satellites

On a related note to point 2, if part of your intention is to earn cheap entries into bracelet events once the satellites for them begin back up in earnest 8 months from now (and it definitely should be), it would make sense to honing that craft early so that you’re ready when it counts most. Fortunately, thanks to online poker, there are satellites to all sorts of events running literally around the clock. It doesn’t matter if it’s a satellite into a Sunday Major or a million dollar live event in Uruguay, just get yourself into some satellite action immediately and begin a year filled with intensive study there too.

  1. Live vicariously and take notes

Finally, as someone who has punted off a stack or two at the WSOP before, let me assure you that 1) The pressure of being at the big show is real and 2) Nothing feels worse than failing at your goals because you beat yourself. If you’ve never experienced the WSOP before and want to avoid this same fate, one good hack is to consume as much WSOP video content as possible leading up to your first trip and really try to reflect on what that experience would be like for you. What would your day-to-day look like? How would you handle the pressure of a deep run? As you watch, try to deeply embody both the practicality and the tension of the real experience, and then plan out how you could optimize for it all.

After all, when do soldiers train for battle? In times of peace, not war.
