Heads-up poker requires constant adjustments, and pre-flop decisions set the tone for every hand

Pre-flop hand selection in heads-up Texas Hold’em requires a different approach than in full-ring or short-handed games. With only two players, every hand involves the blinds, making aggression and adaptability key factors in success. Choosing the right hands to play before the flop can create opportunities to apply pressure and gain an early advantage.

Position is one of the most important considerations in heads-up play. The player on the button, who also posts the small blind, has the benefit of acting last after the flop. This positional advantage allows for a wider opening range, including suited connectors, small pocket pairs, and weaker aces.

Raising with hands like A-5 offsuit or 8-7 suited can put pressure on the opponent and keep them guessing. Since the big blind has to act first post-flop, they are often forced to make difficult decisions.

The big blind, despite being out of position, should not simply fold too often against raises. Defending with hands like K-10 suited, Q-9 offsuit, or even some weaker suited kings is necessary to prevent the button from stealing blinds too easily.

When facing an aggressive opponent, three-betting with hands like A-J, K-Q, or mid-pocket pairs can push back and establish control. Against more passive opponents, flat-calling with a wider range and seeing a flop can be more profitable.

Understanding an opponent’s tendencies is just as important as raw hand strength. A player who rarely raises can be exploited by expanding the raising range and applying pressure. A highly aggressive opponent can be countered by slow-playing strong hands and trapping them into making costly mistakes.
