By recognizing when to change gears, you can extract the most value from your hands

Short Deck Hold’em, also known as Six-Plus Hold’em, requires a different approach than traditional Texas Hold’em due to the smaller deck and altered hand rankings. Understanding when to slow play and when to bet aggressively is key to maximizing value and avoiding costly mistakes.

Slow playing in Short Deck Hold’em works best when holding a monster hand in situations where aggressive betting might scare opponents away. Since the deck removes all twos, threes, fours, and fives, strong hands are more common, and players tend to be more willing to call bets.

If the board is dry and unlikely to improve an opponent’s hand, checking or making a small bet can induce bluffs or weaker hands to catch up just enough to pay off a bigger bet later. For example, if you flop a full house, a slow-play strategy can allow aggressive opponents to continue betting, believing they still have the best hand.

However, aggressive betting is often the best strategy in Short Deck Hold’em due to the increased likelihood of drawing hands completing. Flushes are harder to hit since there are fewer suited cards, but straight draws are more common.

If you have a strong hand on a coordinated board, betting aggressively can force opponents with drawing hands to either pay a premium or fold. This is particularly effective when holding top pair with a strong kicker, trips, or even an open-ended straight draw, as hands can improve quickly in this format.

Balancing between slow playing and aggression depends on the table dynamics and opponents’ tendencies. Against passive players, aggressive betting is effective, while slow playing works better against opponents who frequently bet when given the chance.
