Watch who’s opening light, who’s flatting too wide, and who folds to pressure

Running into a cold deck in a Texas Hold’em tournament can be one of the most frustrating experiences for any player. A cold deck means you’re getting consistently poor hands and not hitting flops, which can test both patience and strategy. However, adapting your approach during these stretches is critical if you want to stay in the tournament long enough for the cards to eventually turn in your favor.

First, tighten up. Playing marginal hands when you’re running cold often leads to even tougher post-flop decisions. Instead, reduce your range, especially from early position. This helps you avoid sticky situations where you’re forced to commit chips with little hope of a win.

That said, you can’t simply fold your way to success. Blind levels increase, and sitting back too much will bleed your stack. Look for specific spots to steal blinds or re-raise in late position, especially against players who open too wide or don’t defend often. You don’t need premium cards to apply pressure — just timing and table awareness.

Table image matters here, too. If you’ve been folding for a while, your tight reputation can become a weapon. Opponents may give you more credit when you finally enter a pot, letting you steal or even get paid off when you do pick up a playable hand.

Keeping your mental game intact is just as important. Tilt can sneak in easily during a cold spell, leading to poor decisions and unnecessary risk. Stick to your fundamentals, manage your stack size with care, and remain patient. Variance is part of tournament poker.

Lastly, use your downtime to study your opponents. When the cards finally come around, you’ll be ready — not just with chips, but with a strategy tailored to your table.
