Approach Short Deck with patience, flexibility and a willingness to adapt in order to thrive

Transitioning from traditional poker formats like No-Limit Hold’em to Short Deck can be both exciting and challenging for players. While the fundamentals of position, aggression, and reading opponents still apply, the game’s structure changes dramatically because of the reduced deck and altered hand rankings. Understanding these differences is essential for making a smooth adjustment and avoiding costly mistakes.

One of the first things players notice is that Short Deck uses only 36 cards, with all twos through fives removed. This significantly shifts the math behind the game. For example, flushes are rarer than full houses, so in many versions of Short Deck, a flush outranks a full house.

Similarly, straights occur more often, and certain starting hands gain or lose value compared to Hold’em. Pocket aces remain strong, but drawing hands such as suited connectors or ace-king gain even more equity because of the higher frequency of straights and flushes.

Another major change lies in preflop ranges. In traditional Hold’em, you might fold marginal hands in early position, but in Short Deck, the compressed deck means players see more playable hands, leading to wider opening ranges and more aggressive play. Adjusting to this dynamic requires being comfortable with higher variance and embracing the fact that hands often run closer in equity.

Postflop play also demands recalibration. With more draws possible, the strength of a single pair decreases while strong draws and combo hands carry significant weight. Players moving from Hold’em must learn to value semi-bluffs more highly and recognize when their opponents’ betting lines represent powerful draws rather than purely made hands.

Finally, bankroll management becomes critical in Short Deck because of the increased variance. Even skilled players will encounter more swings, so a larger cushion is necessary to handle inevitable downswings.
