Balancing aggression with control helps prevent opponents from exploiting your position

Defending the small blind against steal attempts is one of the tougher spots in poker. You’re out of position for the rest of the hand, which makes decisions more difficult. Still, folding too often allows opponents to profit easily from late-position raises.

The first step is understanding your opponent’s stealing range. Players on the button or cutoff often raise with a wide selection of hands. Recognizing this wider range means you can defend with more hands than you would against an early-position raise.

Hand selection matters, but so does how you respond. Calling can keep weaker hands in play, but it puts you at a disadvantage postflop. Mixing in three-bets helps apply pressure and can force opponents to fold marginal holdings.

Three-bet sizing should be adjusted based on stack depth and opponent tendencies. Larger raises can discourage loose callers, while smaller ones may invite action. Finding the right balance helps control the pot before the flop.

Postflop play is where many hands are won or lost. Since you’re out of position, it’s important to play straightforward and avoid unnecessary bluffs. Focus on boards that favor your range and be cautious of textures that connect with your opponent.

Pay attention to continuation betting patterns. Some players fire frequently after raising preflop, while others slow down without strong hands. Identifying these tendencies allows you to decide when to call, raise, or fold.

Stack sizes also influence decisions. Against shorter stacks, committing chips earlier may be correct. Against deeper stacks, there’s more room to maneuver but also more risk if the hand goes wrong.
