Small improvements compound quickly in heads-up formats, where adjustments are rewarded more often

Playing heads-up leaves no place to hide, which makes self-review one of the fastest ways to improve. Every decision carries weight, and small leaks show up quickly. Reviewing your play after each session helps turn tough losses and narrow wins into long-term progress.

Start by reviewing hands without focusing on results. Instead of asking whether you won or lost, ask if the decision made sense with the information available. This mindset prevents emotional bias and helps you judge plays based on logic, ranges, and expected value rather than short-term outcomes.

Using session notes can sharpen your analysis. Write down spots where you felt uncertain, tilted, or rushed. These moments often reveal recurring issues like over-bluffing, passive lines, or missed value bets that quietly cost chips during extended heads-up battles.

Hand replays are especially powerful in heads-up formats. Pause at each decision point and consider alternative bet sizes or lines. Asking what a strong opponent would do in the same spot can expose predictable patterns and encourage more balanced strategies over time.

Tracking simple stats also adds clarity. Frequency of raises, continuation bets, and folds to aggression can highlight tendencies you may not notice in real time. Comparing these numbers across sessions shows whether adjustments are actually working or simply feel effective.

Finally, schedule regular review time away from the table. Distance makes it easier to stay honest and objective. Consistent self-review builds confidence, improves decision speed, and turns heads-up play into a skill you actively control rather than react to.
