Timing your moves right can be the difference between busting early or building a stack for a deep run

Short Deck poker, also known as 6+ Hold’em, is known for its fast pace and action-heavy dynamics. Among the most critical features of the game is the “all-in or fold” scenario, especially during mid-to-late stages of tournaments or in shallow-stacked cash games. Understanding how to navigate this dynamic effectively can give players a crucial edge.

In Short Deck, the deck is trimmed down—2s through 5s are removed—resulting in more equity compression between hands and more frequent strong holdings. Because of this, ranges widen significantly, and decisions often come down to simple math, timing, and reading the flow of the game.

When stacks get shallow, many spots turn into binary decisions: shove or fold. It’s not uncommon to find yourself with only 10-15 antes (antes replace blinds in most Short Deck formats), which puts you in a push-or-fold territory.

One key strategy is to familiarize yourself with optimal shove charts tailored for Short Deck, since traditional No-Limit Hold’em push-fold charts don’t translate directly. For example, suited connectors and mid-pairs gain more value in Short Deck due to the higher frequency of hitting strong post-flop hands.

Position is just as important as stack size. When in late position and facing folds, your shoving range should widen, particularly if players behind you are also short. However, when you’re first to act or face action ahead, your calling or shoving ranges need to be tighter to avoid running into dominating hands.

One mistake many players make is playing too conservatively and waiting for premium hands, which allows antes and pots to pass by. With antes driving the action and strong hands coming more often, it’s often correct to take chances with marginal holdings.
