Poker Strategy Where’s My Edge At The Poker Table? URL has been copied successfully! Where’s my edge? A simple question we know we should be able to answer with high specificity, but probably can’t. At least not without putting some serious thought into it, because it’s something most of us have never been asked. Where’s my edge? How can I be sure I am better than my opponents? What do I know that they don’t? What is it exactly that gives me my advantage? And once I think I’ve discovered the answers to those questions, asking another: if I remove the very worst of my opponents from the field – those players that surrender edge to everyone – do my answers still hold weight? Am I still certain of my edge then? If not, that’s okay, because now I can begin the process of looking for some again. And the truth is that finding areas in need of edge, and then building some, is easier than it seems. A great place to start is looking for areas of discomfort – pain points at the poker table – that trigger emotions of uncertainty or frustration. Take the small blind, for example, a notoriously difficult position to play from for all poker players, and one in which it’s hard to play optimally by just “winging it” or going with your read. In a situation like that, where a high percentage of my opponents will be operating blindly, any little bit of improvement has the potential to bring outsized returns, the potential to bring edge. If you doubt that, ask yourself: how long would I have to dedicate myself to studying small blind play (reviewing hands, running simulations, trying to reverse engineer what top players do) before I see a dramatic improvement at the poker table? How long before I repeatedly find myself with the upper hand in meaningful high-leverage situations in-game? Probably not that long, right? So that becomes the first goal. One position, for as long as it takes. Until I can sit at the table across from my opponent and know, both in my heart and in my head, there it is, there’s my edge. Then I can begin the process from the start and go find some more.
