Staying patient while adjusting your aggression and focus allows you to survive the slump

Every poker player faces cold decks — those frustrating stretches when strong hands never show up and every pot seems to slip away. How a player responds in those moments can define their long-term success. Switching gears effectively during a cold run isn’t about chasing luck; it’s about adjusting strategy, managing emotions, and staying focused on decisions rather than outcomes.

The first adjustment is recognizing that variance is unavoidable. Even elite players endure downswings, so resisting the urge to force action is key. When cards run cold, tighten up your range and choose starting hands more carefully. Protect your bankroll by avoiding unnecessary marginal spots. Patience is often the best weapon — waiting for better opportunities instead of trying to “make something happen” keeps losses small until variance turns.

Table image becomes even more important during these stretches. If you’ve been folding frequently, opponents may start to assume weakness. Use that perception to your advantage. Well-timed bluffs or aggressive semi-bluffs can reclaim some lost chips while keeping your opponents off balance. The goal is not to turn reckless, but to selectively push back when the situation favors you.

Cold decks also test emotional control. Frustration can quickly lead to tilt, which turns a small losing session into a disastrous one. Taking a short break, reviewing previous hands, or lowering your stakes can help reset your mindset. Remember, poker rewards long-term discipline, not short-term aggression.

Adjusting to a cold deck also means reassessing your position and opponents. Identify players who consistently overplay their hands or chase draws, and target them when you do find strength. Small, strategic wins can rebuild momentum and confidence.
