Learning to stay focused after losing a big pot or bubbling can make a real difference over time

Switching from Pot-Limit Omaha (PLO) cash games to tournaments can be a rewarding but challenging move. While the game’s core mechanics remain the same—four hole cards, pot-limit betting, and plenty of action—the strategy shifts significantly when money isn’t on the table every hand but instead locked in the tournament structure.

One of the biggest adjustments is managing stack sizes. In cash games, players usually buy in deep and can reload at any time. In tournaments, stacks vary depending on the stage of play, and once your chips are gone, you’re out.

That means learning how to adjust your hand selection and aggression based on your stack size and the blinds is essential. Early in tournaments, you can play more speculative hands and chase draws if the price is right. But as the blinds increase and the field thins, tighter, more disciplined play often becomes necessary.

Another major change is ICM (Independent Chip Model) pressure. In cash games, each chip is worth its face value. In tournaments, chips fluctuate in value depending on payout jumps and how close you are to the money.

This impacts decisions in ways that are unfamiliar to many cash game players. For example, bluffing in a spot where your tournament life is at risk might be less appealing, even if it would be profitable in a cash setting.

Patience is also more important in tournaments. You can’t just wait for the right spot and buy back in if it doesn’t work out. Tournaments reward discipline and good timing. Reading opponents, adjusting to changing table dynamics, and preserving your stack become crucial skills.
