By staying patient, observing the action closely and resisting tilt, you can weather a cold deck

Every poker player eventually runs into a cold deck in Texas Hold’em. This refers to stretches where the cards simply don’t cooperate, leaving you with weak holdings or second-best hands no matter how disciplined you play. While nobody can control the deal, how you respond during these tough stretches matters a great deal. Avoiding common mistakes can prevent a cold deck from turning into a costly downswing.

One of the biggest errors is forcing the action out of frustration. Players often grow impatient and start entering pots with weak hands just to “make something happen.” This usually compounds the problem. Sticking to sound starting-hand ranges is critical, even if it means folding repeatedly. It may feel dull, but conserving chips is the best way to ride out the storm.

Another mistake is letting emotions dictate bet sizing. During a cold deck, some players start overbetting pots or bluffing too frequently in hopes of winning chips back quickly. These desperate moves are usually transparent to opponents and result in further losses. Remaining consistent with your normal bet patterns, regardless of recent outcomes, keeps your play balanced and harder to exploit.

It’s also important not to ignore table dynamics. When you’re card-dead, you might become predictable, folding too often and allowing aggressive players to bully your blinds. To counter this, selectively defend with hands that play well post-flop, but avoid stretching beyond what your position and stack size allow.

A cold deck can also lead players to stop paying attention, zoning out while waiting for playable cards. This is a mistake, as observing betting patterns, stack sizes, and tendencies can give you opportunities to exploit opponents even when your hand isn’t strong.

Finally, avoid chasing losses by moving up in stakes or abandoning your bankroll strategy. Downswings are part of the game, and protecting your mental discipline is as important as protecting your chips.
