In Short Deck, the player who best understands equity swings ends up in high-EV situations

Short Deck poker changes traditional equity calculations in ways that can trip up even experienced Hold’em players. With the 2s through 5s removed from the deck, the game becomes far more volatile, and seemingly small adjustments in card distribution lead to dramatic equity swings—especially preflop and on dynamic postflop textures. Understanding how and why these shifts occur is essential for making accurate decisions and capitalizing on opponents who still rely on standard Hold’em intuition.

Because there are fewer low cards and a higher concentration of broadway and middling ranks, premium hands are more common, and ranges collide more powerfully. For example, suited connectors gain significant value thanks to increased straight and flush potential, while traditional high-card holdings may not dominate as strongly as they do in full-deck Hold’em. This results in narrower equity gaps between hands that would normally be miles apart.

Postflop, equity shifts can be even more pronounced. Boards develop quickly, redraws appear more frequently, and hands that look strong on the flop can be overtaken by the turn or river at a much higher rate. For instance, top pair or even an overpair is far less secure in Short Deck; meanwhile, combo draws and open-ended straight draws pick up substantial equity because of their improved chances to complete.

Players who track these shifts effectively will identify profitable bluffing spots, recognize when to apply pressure, and know when a hand that feels strong is actually fragile. The key is staying aware of how tightly equities run together and adjusting your aggression, calling ranges, and bet sizing accordingly.
