The Spanish player has made history and brought new excitement to the Triton series
Sergio Martinez Gonzalez has marked his name in poker history by claiming the largest prize ever awarded in a Pot-Limit Omaha (PLO) tournament. His victory at the $100,000 PLO event during the 2025 Triton Poker Jeju festival secured him a massive $2,340,000 payout, surpassing the previous record set at the 2023 World Series of Poker.
The high-stakes tournament saw 91 entries, generating a prize pool of $9.1 million. Martinez Gonzalez, already an established PLO contender, had previously earned a seven-figure score when he finished second in a WSOP event in 2023. With this latest win, his career earnings now approach $3.8 million, further solidifying his reputation in the poker world.
Throughout the final table, Martinez Gonzalez displayed exceptional control, navigating through a competitive field of top professionals. His decisive moment came when he knocked out Dutch PLO specialist Tom Vogelsang.
Holding a lower straight against Vogelsang’s premium pocket aces, the board ran in his favor, sending his opponent to the rail in fifth place with $686,000. From there, he continued his dominance, eliminating Lin Wei in third place for $1,055,000 before setting up a heads-up duel against China’s Ding Biao.
The final showdown saw Martinez Gonzalez battling back from a slight chip disadvantage. Ding, a two-time Triton champion, proved to be a formidable opponent, but a late surge from Martinez Gonzalez shifted the momentum. The last hand saw Ding push all-in with a strong holding, only to be outdrawn by Martinez Gonzalez’s lesser pair when the board completed. Ding secured $1,610,000 as the runner-up.
With this victory, Martinez Gonzalez not only set a new record for PLO prize money but also earned crucial points in the Card Player Player of the Year race, moving into the top 100. His win cements his status as one of the premier PLO players in the game today.
