Matthew Bergart died after being shot by armed assailants in a home he was visiting
Matthew Bergart, a Canadian high-stakes online poker player, was killed in a targeted heist in the early morning hours last Thursday in Toronto. According to the police, the 30-year-old was simply “in the wrong place at the wrong time” when the incident occurred.
Bergart was found dead from gunshot wounds inside a townhome after police were alerted to the incident at around 2:25 AM. According to police, Bergart wasn’t the target of the three armed suspects who entered the home in Toronto’s Etobicoke district, a former suburb that’s now within the city limits, demanding cash and valuables. He just happened to be visiting when the incident took place.
After a struggle between the robbers and the victim, Bergart was shot several times. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Witnesses said the suspects wore dark clothing and escaped in a “white or light-colored sedan.” The suspects have not yet been apprehended, and a search is currently underway for the persons responsible for the homicide.
Bergart, known as the “Mysterious Canadian” when playing online, has battled against many of the world’s top players. He has also had some success in live events, and his sole live tournament cash was in the 2019 WSOP Main Event, where he finished 825th for $18,535.
Numerous YouTube videos can be found of Bergart playing online, including one posted three weeks ago showing him winning a $20,000 pot with top pair.
