Sean Perry allegedly lost a fortune backing the team he expected to win
Caution: Super Bowl LVIII spoiler alert ahead. Poker player Sean Perry claims to be one of the world’s best sports bettors but lost a $1.1 million bet after his Super Bowl wager on the San Francisco 49ers. The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Niners 25-22 in overtime after Patrick Mahomes led a game-winning drive to win his third championship and Super Bowl MVP, putting himself into the GOAT discussion with Tom Brady.

Perry placed the wager at Circa Sports and shared his seven-figure ticket on X right before kickoff. It was one of the biggest bets placed on the Super Bowl and would have paid out $2.1 million at -110 odds for a profit of $1 million.
It seemed that for much of the game, the former poker pro with over $6.8 million in live tournament earnings was on track for the win after the 49ers led 10-0 late in the first half. San Francisco needed a fourth down stop in overtime to win the game, but Mahomes would run for the first down and later throw a three-yard touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman Jr. for the walkoff victory, crushing Perry’s hopes and those of anyone who bet on the 49ers.
Perry has given up playing high-stakes poker and has now moved on to sports betting. He sells his sports betting picks and declares he’s one of the best. He has also drawn many critics, with some sports bettors and poker pros like Shaun Deeb referring to Perry as a “scammer.” Will Jaffe also mocked him in several parody videos.
Another poker pro, Jesse Lonis, won $200,000 after taking the Chiefs in the Super Bowl. Mahomes and Kansas City are 15-3 in the playoffs and haven’t lost in the postseason since 2021.
