Several players have reported uncovering cheating during live poker events
Poker players are raising concerns about cheating in Las Vegas tournaments, with professional player Mike Holtz leading the charge. Holtz, a two-time WSOP Online Player of the Year, took to social media with a nearly 10-minute video detailing his frustrations after playing in the $800 buy-in Poker Atlas Tour Main Event. He alleged that a group of players was colluding and that tournament staff failed to intervene.

Holtz described how he noticed suspicious behavior between two players at his table. A short-stacked player in Seat 2 seemed to be subtly revealing his folded cards to a big-stacked player in Seat 9. He observed this pattern multiple times, leading him to believe the two were working together. The situation became even more concerning when the player in Seat 9, Juan Campayo Hernandez, ended up winning the tournament and taking home the top prize of $60,250.
Despite bringing the issue to the attention of the floor staff, Holtz claimed no action was taken. He also said the suspected cheaters were part of a larger group that has been seen in various Las Vegas poker rooms. His concerns extended beyond collusion, as he also pointed out issues with dealers inadvertently exposing cards, which could give unfair advantages to observant players.
The video sparked reactions from the poker community, with many players supporting Holtz’s call for better security. Patrick Leonard echoed his concerns, noting that he has frequently warned dealers about their high card pitch, which allows others to see the cards. Joel Baker, who finished third in the same tournament, admitted he had similar suspicions during play.
Holtz believes that the best way to address these issues is for the poker community to take a stand. He suggested that dealers switch to a European-style card slide to prevent exposure and encouraged players to report any suspicious activity. His ultimate goal is to create a fair and safe environment where everyone can enjoy the game without the fear of being cheated.
