The Poker Brat previously said he wouldn’t participate but could change his mind
Phil Hellmuth, one of poker’s most recognizable figures, has left a big decision in the hands of his fans. The 60-year-old, who has competed in the World Series of Poker’s Main Event every year since the mid-1980s, previously announced he might sit out this summer’s $10,000 tournament due to the physical demands of the schedule. Now, with the 2025 WSOP beginning today, Hellmuth is asking the public to decide his fate.
On Sunday, Hellmuth took to social media platform X, telling his followers he would let a poll determine whether or not he plays in this year’s Main Event. “I’m going to honor whatever the Twitter poll says,” he wrote, adding that if he does enter this year, he won’t play in 2026 unless the event structure is changed to allow for more rest between long days of play.
Known for his dramatic table presence and unmatched record of 17 WSOP bracelets, Hellmuth has voiced concerns about the Main Event’s demanding format. The tournament typically runs for more than a week, with daily play sessions stretching from midday to midnight. He has said the grind has taken a toll, making it harder to perform at his best.
I will let YOU guys decide if I play or boycott?
Should I play in the 2025 @WSOP Main Event? Or boycott hoping that they change the structure for next year: by giving us Day 6 off?
In my next tweet I will release a poll and honor whatever the results are#POSITIVITY pic.twitter.com/ex2hq5VBhs

Despite that, early results from the poll suggest fans still want him in. As of now, more than 70% of respondents are encouraging him to play. With thousands of votes already cast, the numbers are leaning heavily toward seeing Hellmuth back at the table.
While nothing is final until the poll closes, the momentum appears to be pushing him toward yet another run at the title. Whether it’s for the glory, the fans, or the game itself, there’s still a good chance poker’s most decorated player will be chasing bracelet number 18 this July.
