The Great Dane admits he may have pushed himself beyond his limits

Danish poker legend Gus Hansen recently spoke openly about his difficult experiences in online poker during a live Q&A session with the training platform Run It Once. The conversation gave fans a rare look at how the former tournament star views his past results in the digital game.

Hansen was one of poker’s most recognizable players during the early 2000s. Known for his aggressive style, he built a strong reputation on the live tournament circuit and frequently appeared on televised poker shows. His fearless approach made him a fan favorite during the poker boom.

Despite that success, his online poker record told a different story. Hansen admitted during the discussion that he often placed himself in extremely difficult games against elite opponents. Those decisions led to heavy losses over time, something he now reflects on with surprising honesty.

Many of those battles took place against some of the most respected online players of the era. Hansen regularly competed against high-stakes professionals such as Tom Dwan, Phil Ivey, and Viktor Blom. Looking back, he said those games often put him at a disadvantage.

Hansen explained that his approach to poker has changed as he has grown older. While he once jumped into almost any no-limit hold’em game, he now prefers mixed games where he believes his skill set gives him a better chance to win.

The Danish pro also reflected on how poker itself has changed since his peak years. During the early poker television era, the tournament calendar was smaller and easier for fans to follow. Today’s schedule is far larger, which makes it harder to identify the top players in the world.

Hansen still holds an impressive tournament résumé. His biggest early breakthrough came when he won the World Poker Tour Five Diamond World Poker Classic at Bellagio, earning more than $550,000 and becoming the first champion in World Poker Tour history.
