He’s unlikely to receive maximum penalties but could still serve several years behind bars
Prominent attorney and high-stakes poker player Tom Goldstein has been convicted on most counts in a federal tax fraud case tied to his gambling activity. A jury in Greenbelt, Maryland, found him guilty on 12 of 16 charges after several days of deliberations.
Prosecutors alleged that Goldstein concealed millions in poker winnings between 2016 and 2023. The case centered on ultra-high-stakes heads-up matches played around the world, where he reportedly won and lost massive sums in single sessions.
Jurors convicted him of tax evasion, multiple counts of failing to pay taxes, making false statements to mortgage lenders, and assisting in the preparation of inaccurate tax returns. Authorities claimed he hid income from accountants and diverted legal fees to cover gambling debts.
Goldstein founded SCOTUSblog and built a reputation as a leading Supreme Court advocate. His legal career made the charges especially shocking in Washington circles.
The six-week trial featured testimony from well-known figures, including actor Tobey Maguire and billionaire Andy Beal. Poker professionals and financial experts also described Goldstein’s betting habits and financial disclosures.
Defense attorneys argued that Goldstein relied heavily on tax professionals and never intended to mislead the IRS. He testified in his own defense, admitting he downplayed gambling debts on mortgage forms but denying deliberate tax evasion.
The conviction follows a broader federal focus on financial compliance among high earners. Goldstein now faces potential prison time, with sentencing expected in the coming months.
