The Mississippi local continues to put up strong results at the felt
Cody Stanford added another impressive victory to his poker career by taking down the RGPS Tunica Main Event at his home casino, Horseshoe Tunica. The RunGood Poker Series ambassador secured his sixth RGPS ring after a long day of competition, earning $53,988 in the process. The $600 buy-in event drew 546 players, generating a prize pool of $278,460.
Stanford, who had strong support from family and friends throughout the tournament, acknowledged how much the win meant to him. He emphasized that winning any event is a great feeling, but doing so at home, surrounded by his loved ones, made it even more special. His path to victory wasn’t easy, as he faced multiple setbacks, including finding himself as the short stack during three- and four-handed play. However, his aggressive style and ability to adjust kept him in contention.
Heading into Day 2, Stanford held one of the largest stacks after a strong performance in the Day 1c flight. He started fast, eliminating Steven McKuin early on with pocket aces against pocket kings. From there, he steadily built his stack, capitalizing on a passive table to gain an edge. The final table featured some accomplished players, including WSOP bracelet winner Kyle Cartwright and RGPS Player of the Year leader Michael Johns.
In the end, Stanford’s heads-up battle against Johns was brief. Holding a dominant chip lead, he flopped a set of nines and got all the chips in on the turn. Johns needed help to survive but couldn’t improve, securing Stanford the title.
