The World Series of Poker Circuit (WSOPC) tournament at the Commerce Casino in Los Angeles concluded this month, with local competitor Anthony Marquez capturing the championship title. The highly anticipated tournament generated massive interest throughout the region and easily met its impressive $1-million prize pool guarantee.
Marquez managed to outlast a highly competitive field of players to secure his first career gold ring. This victory provides redemption for the California resident who narrowly missed out on the exact same championship title when he finished as the runner-up during the 2024 competition.
The tournament drew a field of 693 entrants, which solidified the destination as a favorite stop for poker enthusiasts. Reaching the final stage of the tournament proved to be an incredibly difficult task for the field as several iconic poker legends failed to survive the elimination rounds.
Experienced poker titans included Billy Baxter, who finished in 32nd place, and Phil Laak, who busted in 36th place. Brian Hastings exited in 37th place.
Marquez began the final day of play at a severe disadvantage as one of the shortest chip stacks at the table, but his precise and aggressive strategy allowed him to overcome the odds. He entered the ultimate heads-up match holding a dominant two-to-one chip advantage over his final opponent Erik Selami.
The definitive final hand occurred when Selami moved all of his remaining chips into the middle with ace-queen and Marquez quickly called the wager with a pair of jacks. The community cards failed to improve Selami’s hand, which sealed the victory for Marquez.
