The win gave him another $117,000 to add to his growing bankroll
Alex Montgomery has etched his name into the history of the UK Poker Championships (UKPC) Masters Main Event after claiming victory at Dusk Till Dawn. The English player outlasted a huge field of 937 entries to secure the title, the trophy, and a payday of £92,500 (US$108,225). The win stands as the second-largest score of his career, just shy of the £100,000 (US$117,000) he collected for finishing runner-up in the 2023 GUKPT Grand Final.
The £500,000 (US$585,000) prize pool was spread across 143 players, with well-known names like Chris Da-Silva, Will Kassouf, Brandon Sheils, and Michael Rosaman making the money. By Day 2, only 111 remained, and soon the action narrowed to the final table, where Montgomery began his surge.
He eliminated Keith Johnson in ninth place, followed by Tariq Mahmood in eighth. The reigning chip leader entering Day 3, Jamie Holland, also fell to Montgomery after his ace-seven couldn’t hold against queen-jack. Rick Trigg, a popular grinder, exited in sixth courtesy of Daniel van Geete, but Montgomery quickly regained control, sending Mitchell Jennings and Yannik Seabrook to the rail before busting van Geete with pocket queens.
That set up a heads-up clash with Tom Waters, who started the final day as the shortest stack but managed to navigate his way to second place. Waters briefly held the lead after his ace-five bested Montgomery’s ace-seven, but Montgomery didn’t take long to regain momentum.
On the decisive hand, Montgomery’s five-four of diamonds connected with a flush draw and third pair, while Waters held five-three for a straight draw. A king on the river sealed the win, crowning Montgomery the champion.
Waters collected £61,500 (US$71,955) for his runner-up finish, capping off a strong run for the household—his wife, Charlie Waters, recently finished second in the GUKPT Luton Main Event. Montgomery, however, dominated the final table by eliminating nearly every opponent, cementing a career-defining victory at the UKPC Masters.
