The Spanish poker phenom continues to show off at the felt
Adrian Mateos, the Spanish poker sensation, has added another impressive victory to his career by winning the Super High Roller (SHR) Series Cyprus Event #6: $25,750 No-Limit Hold’em Mystery Bounty. This win significantly increased his standing in the 2024 Global Poker Index (GPI) Player of the Year race. Mateos took home a total of $327,000, which included $162,000 in prize money and an additional $165,000 in mystery bounties.
However, despite his first-place finish, Mateos was not the event’s biggest earner. That title went to poker legend Phil Ivey, who, despite finishing second, walked away with a massive $413,000. Ivey’s earnings were largely thanks to the $300,000 in mystery bounties he collected, showcasing once again why many consider him one of the best all-around poker players in the world.
The tournament featured 40 entrants and a final table full of stars. Canadian poker pro Sorel Mizzi, with over $11 million in total live earnings, finished in sixth place, taking home $32,000. His fellow Canadian, Sam Greenwood, who has accumulated nearly $35 million in live earnings and holds one World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet, ended up in fifth place with $42,000. American Seth Davies, another accomplished player with a World Poker Tour (WPT) title under his belt, finished fourth, earning $59,000.
The final three players left in the tournament were Ivey, Mateos, and Quan Zhou, the winner of Event #2. Ivey initially led the three-handed play but quickly lost his advantage to Mateos, who doubled up and secured the lead. This win marked Mateos’s third top-three finish in the SHR Series within the first six events.
With this victory, Mateos gets closer to the $50 million mark in lifetime live tournament earnings, while Ivey remains close behind with over $46 million. Both players continue to solidify their positions as legends in the poker world.
