The poker organization hopes to build on poker’s popularity in the region
The World Poker Tour (WPT) has launched its first-ever Dealer Certification Program in Thailand, marking a significant step forward in the country’s growing poker scene. The event, held from May 20 to 24, 2025, in Bangkok, was a collaboration between the Thai Ministry of Tourism and Sports and the WPT Tournament Committee. The initiative aimed to provide world-class training for dealers and elevate the standards of poker in the region.
The five-day program was designed to equip aspiring dealers with the essential skills needed to succeed in the professional poker world. A total of 100 participants took part, guided by a team of international tournament directors and local poker experts. The training blended theoretical lessons with hands-on experience, offering a comprehensive approach to the art of poker dealing.
The curriculum consisted of three key modules. The first, Fundamental Skills Training, covered poker knowledge, proper shuffling techniques, and understanding game flow. The second, Exhibition Management, focused on how to handle table disputes, enforce rules, and maintain professionalism in live events. The final module, Chip and Time Management, taught dealers how to calculate pots, manage blind structures, and ensure the smooth flow of a tournament.
Upon completion, participants were assessed through written and practical evaluations conducted by WPT’s international floor staff. Those who passed received priority placement in the WPT dealer talent pool, potentially opening doors to opportunities at major events in Thailand and across Southeast Asia.
This program is part of a broader, long-term effort supported by the Thai government to foster local talent in key roles such as dealers and event staff. In partnership with the WPT, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports has also launched the Local Mind Sports Talent Development Program, aiming to cultivate a sustainable ecosystem for poker in Thailand and the region.
This initiative sets the stage for a more professional and organized poker community in Southeast Asia, particularly as the WPT Prime Thailand event approaches.
