Adrian Mateos and Jesse Lonis are having incredible runs at the felt
Thousands of professional and amateur poker enthusiasts will descend on Sin City this week for the start of the 55th World Series of Poker from the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas for a chance to win the biggest title of all. The two major Player of the Year titles will also be up for grabs as the points accumulated during the series will help determine who will be the frontrunner when the season hits the home stretch this fall.
Adrian Mateos is the current leader in the CardPlayer Magazine POY standings, reaching the top with five cashes during the Triton Poker Super High Roller Series, and has an 880-point lead over Michael Watson. He earned POY points in four events, including a $50,000 buy-in tournament win and second place in a $200,000 event. He also made a final table at the European Poker Tour Monte Carlo €25,000 High Roller and just missed the final day of the €5,000 Main Event.
Jesse Lonis is at the top of the current Global Poker Index Player of the Year race, earning over 400 points in 13 events at the 2024 World Poker Tour series at the Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood, FL. His earlier performance at the US Poker Open in April helped him surpass Stephen Chidwick for the top spot on the leaderboard. Michael Watson, David Coleman, and Daniel Dvoress round out the top five in the standings.
This year’s WSOP could drastically change the current POY standings. Four players, Chris Brewer, Josh Arieh, Chad Eveslage, and Ryan Miller, earned two bracelets in 2023 to put them in contention for the WSOP POY race and the overall title.
