Nick Bowyer has been crowned the greatest amateur poker player of the year
The 2024 World Championship of Amateur Poker (WCOAP) has crowned a new champion this past weekend. Nick Bowyer has emerged as the winner, taking home a nice payday. The event, organized by the Amateur Poker Association & Tour (APAT), took place at the Dusk Till Dawn Poker Club, drawing a large crowd of amateur poker enthusiasts.
Bowyer secured the title of the 2024 Amateur Poker World Champion after triumphing in the £210 (US$265) WCOAP Main Event. This event is considered the pinnacle of the WCOAP, often likened to the World Series of Poker (WSOP) but specifically dedicated to amateur players. Winning this prestigious title means Bowyer can now proudly claim his place among the top amateur poker players in the world.
This year’s Main Event attracted 518 players, creating a substantial prize pool of £90,650 (US$114,250). The competition was fierce, with only the top 76 finishers earning a share of the prize money. The minimum payout for those who made it into the money was £350 (US$440), while the top 18 players were guaranteed at least £1,000 (US$1,260).
The nine finalists all walked away with at least £1,900 (US$2,390), highlighting the significant rewards available at this event. In Bowyer’s case, he filled his pockets with £15,000 (US$16,600) after achieving this great victory.
The WCOAP is known for its high level of competition, as amateur players from around the world come together to test their skills. Winning any event at this festival is a major achievement, but the Main Event victory stands out as the ultimate accomplishment. Bowyer’s win has earned him not only the title but also a place in the history of amateur poker, marking him as the top amateur player for 2024.
