The action started with a bang as two players faced immediate elimination
The biggest poker tournament of the year, the $10,000 World Series of Poker (WSOP) No-Limit Hold’em Main Event, started yesterday. Live coverage on PokerGO began with the action and will run until the champion is crowned on July 17. Expect over 100 hours of intense poker action in the coming weeks.
Last year’s record-breaking tournament saw 10,043 players compete, smashing the previous record of 8,773 set in 2006. Daniel Weinman emerged victorious, taking home $12.1 million and his second championship bracelet.
Similar to last year, the 2024 Main Event features four starting days followed by two Day 2s (July 3-8). Then comes a grueling stretch of six days with players from all the starting flights battling it out. The final table will be set on July 14, and after a one-day break, the final nine will return on July 16 to play for the title over two evenings.
The first day already showed how fierce the competition is, with several players finding themselves hitting the rail almost as soon as the first cards were dealt. Defending champion Daniel Weinman was still giving his inaugural speech when an amateur player, Harlan Karnofsky, knocked out Craig Issod.
There was another first-hand shocker as online pro Trip Darroch was eliminated by David Williamson, another amateur, who placed a huge bet with quads that Darroch couldn’t overcome with his full house. While it’s normal to see some players get knocked out on the first day, two big names going out so early is unusual.
