Long-time WSOPC grinder Maurice Hawkins unsurprisingly sets the record

The long-running chase to become the first poker player with 20 World Series of Poker Circuit (WSOPC) rings has officially ended. Maurice Hawkins secured the milestone victory in New Orleans, winning the $600 Pot-Limit Omaha event for $14,548 and etching his name alone at the top of the Circuit leaderboard.

Hawkins entered the tournament tied with Ari Engel at 19 rings, setting the stage for a high-stakes showdown with history on the line. The event at Caesars New Orleans drew 106 players, building a prize pool of $54,590. Among the contenders was Daniel Lowery, who also had his sights set on history. The Arkansas grinder recently reached 18 rings after a pair of victories in Tulsa and was in position to close the gap again, but his run ended in eighth place for $1,647.

The final table featured a mix of local players and seasoned Circuit regulars. David Cook claimed ninth place for $1,445, while Will Oertling, Hariharan Rangarajan, and James Calloway exited in seventh, sixth, and fifth place, respectively. Gregory Headrick collected $4,448 for fourth, and Daniel Pearlman took third for $6,350. That left Hawkins heads-up against Thai Cao, who was looking for his first piece of WSOPC jewelry.

With a slight chip edge to start, Hawkins never let go of control. After a back-and-forth battle, he closed it out, denying Cao but securing $9,431 for the runner-up in addition to his own record-breaking payday.

The win pushes Hawkins to the top of the all-time WSOPC ring list with 20, adding to a résumé that already includes more than $6.4 million in live tournament cashes. Despite his success, Hawkins remains a polarizing figure due to past disputes with backers. Still, the achievement ensures his place in Circuit history.

Engel, Lowery, and Josh Reichard (16 rings) remain in pursuit, and the next milestone—25 rings—now looms as the new benchmark. If their current pace continues, the race for that number could heat up within just a few years.
