Indiana does not currently offer regulated online casino gaming, making the poker carveout significant for players
The Indiana Senate has approved a bill aimed at shutting down sweepstakes-style online casinos, but poker players may avoid the fallout. Lawmakers advanced an amended version of HB1052 that targets casino-style sweepstakes games while carving out space for certain poker platforms.
The measure already cleared the Indiana House earlier this month by a wide margin. With the legislative session set to end soon, both chambers must reconcile their versions quickly. The proposal reflects a broader push across several states to crack down on sweepstakes gambling models.
A key amendment from Sen. Kyle Walker allows peer-to-peer, skill-based poker games to continue operating. That language keeps sweepstakes-style poker sites such as Global Poker, ClubWPT Gold, and Club Poker available to Indiana players. The exemption separates poker from slots, table games, and other casino offerings.
Under the bill, sweepstakes operators would be barred from offering slot-style games, video poker, table games, lottery products, bingo, and sports betting. Violators could face fines reaching $100,000. The legislation also strengthens enforcement authority for regulators.
Sweepstakes platforms typically use a dual-currency system, allowing users to play for free with virtual coins while offering optional purchases tied to redeemable prizes. The Indiana Gaming Commission has said it lacks authority to shut down these sites under current law, prompting lawmakers to step in.
Industry groups argue that regulation and taxation would generate revenue, but lawmakers chose a ban with a limited poker exception. The final outcome now depends on whether both chambers agree before adjournment.
