The film explores the growth of poker across the state and why it’s legal
A new poker documentary is in development, aiming to spotlight the unique and often misunderstood poker scene in Texas.
Titled The Battle for Texas Poker, the project is being produced by P+R Creative and is already generating interest following the release of its first trailer.
The film plans to focus on the growth of poker across the state, rather than promoting any single brand. While clubs like Texas Card House appear in the documentary, the broader goal is to highlight how poker operates throughout Texas and why it continues to thrive despite legal debates.
Poker in Texas exists in a complicated space. The Lone Star State law generally prohibits gambling, yet certain provisions allow poker rooms to operate legally if they avoid taking a traditional rake. Many clubs instead charge membership fees or hourly seat rates, creating a model that has spread across the state.
That system has drawn both support and criticism. Some lawmakers argue that these clubs still fall outside the intent of the law, while players and operators insist they are fully compliant. The documentary aims to break down these arguments and explain how the system actually works.
Beyond legal issues, the film also explores the cultural roots of poker in Texas. From underground games tied to organized crime decades ago to today’s structured social clubs, the story reflects how the game has evolved alongside the state itself.
Several well-known figures are set to appear, including Greg Raymer and Jeff Platt, offering insight into both the history and current state of the game. Their perspectives help connect past traditions with the modern poker landscape.
Production is still ongoing, and no official release date has been confirmed. Early expectations suggest the documentary could arrive later this year, possibly aligning with major poker events to capture a wider audience.
