The province is inching closer to following Ontario’s lead
The Canadian province of Alberta is poised to enter the realm of regulated online poker. Government officials are currently in the final stages of their initial consultations with key stakeholders on a potential overhaul of the province’s iGaming industry. This strategic move mirrors Ontario’s successful model and is expected to pave the way for the launch of a regulated online poker market in Alberta sometime in 2025.
Minister Dale Nally, responsible for Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction, has been at the forefront of these discussions. He has held meetings with First Nations communities to address their exclusion from the current iGaming revenue stream. The province’s 24 land-based casinos, including five First Nations-operated establishments and four racinos, are also involved in the consultation process.
The potential expansion of Alberta’s iGaming landscape is a significant step towards generating additional revenue for the province and its Indigenous communities. Minister Nally’s commitment to responsible gaming and the inclusion of all stakeholders indicates a thoughtful approach to regulation.
A crucial factor influencing Alberta’s online poker plans is the ongoing legal battle surrounding shared liquidity. The province is closely monitoring the Ontario Court of Appeal’s decision on whether this practice violates the Criminal Code of Canada.
