Labor unions in Virginia are stepping up efforts to influence a key decision on casino expansion, urging Abigail Spanberger to approve pending legislation. The bill would open the door for a proposed casino and entertainment district in Fairfax County, but it still awaits the governor’s decision.
The proposal, known as Senate Bill 756, has already cleared the state legislature. If signed, it would allow local officials to move forward with a public referendum. Voters in Fairfax County would then have the final say on whether the project moves ahead.
Union members recently gathered in Tysons to show support for the development. Backers argue the project goes beyond a casino, describing it as a full-scale entertainment complex that includes a hotel, housing, and retail space. They say the gaming portion would make up only a small part of the overall plan.
Job creation remains a central argument from supporters. Labor groups estimate thousands of construction and long-term hospitality positions could be created if the project is approved. Many workers say it would allow them to find employment closer to home instead of commuting long distances.
Supporters also point to potential economic benefits. Increased tax revenue from the development could be directed toward public services, including education. Local union leaders argue that additional funding could help address rising costs in the region.
Despite the backing from labor groups, challenges remain. Some local officials have previously expressed opposition to casino expansion, and a referendum would still need to be scheduled before voters can weigh in.
