The casino operator is going to try harder to get Texas to legalize casinos this time around
Las Vegas Sands is upping its bet on turning the tables in Texas after filing a petition seeking legalized casino gambling in the Lone Star state.
The proposal is sponsored by the Texas Destination Resort Alliance, established in 2021 and seeks to bring luxury offerings, such as resorts, fine dining and entertainment, to Texans by supporting the expansion of casino gambling.
This action is part of Las Vegas Sands’ ongoing push to change Texas’ view on gambling. The company established the Texas Sands political action committee (PAC) in 2022, which allotted $2 million to lobby for retail casinos.
The company, which purchased a controlling stake in the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks late last year, remains dedicated to its pursuit despite challenges in the Texas legislature. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick voiced his doubts that any legislation would get enough support among Republican Senators. However, Las Vegas Sands representative Miriam Adelson has been outspoken about her hopes to legalize casino gaming in Texas.
Representative Charlie Geren introduced HJR 97 in February, which proposes amending the Texas Constitution to allow casinos and make the necessary legislative changes.
The Chickasaw Nation, owners of Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, have voiced their support of casinos in Texas. They will soon launch the Choctaw Landing Casino and Resort in Oklahoma, giving further momentum to the debate on Texas gambling legislation.
Separate bills to allow sports betting have been introduced and are backed by the Texas Sports Betting Alliance. Former Governor Rick Perry, spokesman for the alliance, supports the legislation introduced by Representative Jeff Leach and Senator Lois Kolkhorst.
Amending the state constitution to legalize gambling would need support from two-thirds of the House and Senate and approval by voters in an election.
