Ohio Senator Niraj Antani has introduced new legislation aiming to legalize online casino gaming in the state. Following the success of Ohio’s online sports betting market, the bill seeks to expand the range of online gambling options available to residents, allowing them to play casino games from the comfort of their own homes.
Senator Antani believes that legalizing online casinos will help tackle the issue of illegal gambling operators that currently cater to Ohioans. By regulating the sector under the Ohio Casino Control Commission, the state could offer safer and more secure options for online players. The move would also ensure that the state can collect tax revenue from the iGaming industry, which could be funneled into important public programs, much like the revenue generated from sports betting.
While only seven states currently allow online casino gaming, the Buckeye State may join their ranks if this legislation passes. Expanding gambling options has been a controversial issue in some states, with concerns about increased addiction rates. However, there is growing support among Ohio lawmakers for regulated online gambling. Several representatives recently published a letter praising the potential benefits of legalization.
Ohio’s journey into online sports betting has been a financial success since its launch in January 2023, generating $136 million in tax revenue in its first year. Much of this revenue has been directed toward funding public education. Senator Antani, a key figure in pushing for sports betting legalization in 2021, hopes to replicate this success with online casino gaming.
