New York is cracking down on where gambling ads can be found, even online
New York is tightening its regulations on sports betting by introducing new measures to promote responsible gambling. Governor Kathy Hochul recently signed a bill into law that mandates all advertisements for mobile sports betting to include warnings about the potential risks of gambling addiction. Previously, these warnings were only required in specific circumstances, but the new legislation broadens their presence in online sports betting ads.
The law, known as S1550/A1118, also requires the New York State Gaming Commission to work closely with the Commissioner of Addiction Services and Supports. This partnership aims to ensure that all gambling advertisements not only carry responsible gambling messages but also prominently feature a hotline number for problem gambling assistance.
Governor Hochul emphasized the importance of safeguarding New Yorkers from the potential dangers of gambling addiction. She stated, “Protecting New Yorkers from the dangerous and addictive effects of problem gambling and sports betting is vitally important for the prosperity of our great State.” Hochul added that the new law will provide residents with the resources needed to safely participate in betting activities while being aware of the risks.
Brian O’Dwyer, chair of the New York State Gaming Commission, praised the move, noting that New York has long prioritized responsible gaming. He said, “By signing this bill, Governor Hochul continues to deliver smart and responsible gaming policies that help support our State.”
This change comes at a time when sports betting in New York has gained significant popularity, especially since its legalization in 2021. With these new rules in place, New York is aiming to balance the booming industry with increased attention to public health and safety.
