Debate continues in New Hampshire over a large casino project after developers requested a presentation postponement
A controversial charitable gaming facility proposal in New Hampshire remains under intense debate following a newly approved scheduling delay for the project presentation. The development firm ARBI Farms LLC requested a postponement from the local planning board, which officially pushed the highly anticipated project review to the meeting on June 25.
If the multi-phase development ultimately receives official approval, it will make it possible for Delaware North Co. to initiate a major transformation of land off Spit Brook Road. This sweeping redevelopment plan encompasses the property currently occupied by the historic Sheraton Tara Hotel, which has been in operation for almost 50 years.
The massive construction proposal is divided into two distinct construction phases that aim to dramatically expand the existing property footprint. According to official documents filed with the planning board, the initial phase will construct 65,900 square feet of gaming space alongside a 293,479 square foot parking garage.
The subsequent second phase intends to add another more gaming space and a larger parking area. Upon the final completion of both development phases, the complex will feature 92,860 square feet dedicated entirely to gaming operations and a large parking garage.
Community members and local stakeholders have flooded the planning board with letters reflecting deep divisions over the potential societal and structural impacts. Opponents heavily criticize the expansion by warning that the massive facility will severely worsen traffic congestion in an already overburdened neighborhood.
Additional critics argue that large casinos cause spikes in local crime rates and actively exacerbate gambling addiction within the surrounding community. Conversely, numerous representatives from regional nonprofit groups and social service agencies strongly support the venture because state law mandates that charitable gaming venues distribute a significant percentage of their revenues directly to these organizations.
