With resistance now organized at the State House, the path toward legal casinos appears increasingly uncertain

Efforts to legalize casinos in South Carolina are facing renewed resistance as opposition from faith-based groups grows louder. A coalition of religious organizations and church leaders gathered at the State House this week to push back against proposals that would expand gambling in the state.

The group organized a “Pastor’s Day at the Capitol,” holding a press conference in the first-floor lobby of the State House. Leaders used the event to outline concerns about the social and economic effects of casino gambling, which they described as harmful to families and local communities.

Throughout the day, faith leaders also met privately with lawmakers to share their views. Many warned that casinos could target vulnerable populations and lead to increased financial hardship. They argued that any potential tax revenue would come at too high a cost.

Several prominent organizations took part in the effort, including Palmetto Family Alliance, Faith Wins America, and the South Carolina Association of Christian Schools. Representatives from major Christian denominations across the state also joined the discussions, showing broad alignment across religious groups.

Chad Connelly, president of Faith Wins America, led the press conference and emphasized the importance of public involvement. He has previously held leadership roles within the Republican Party and said lawmakers should listen closely to concerns raised by churches and families.

Speakers included leaders from education, ministry, and denominational organizations. Each spoke about the long-term impact they believe casino gambling could have on South Carolina, particularly in terms of addiction, debt, and strain on social services.

The push to legalize casinos has gained attention in recent years as neighboring states expand gaming options. Supporters argue that casinos could bring jobs and revenue, but opposition remains strong.
