The DCMS has released draft regulations aimed at modernizing the operation of physical casinos

The UK’s land-based casino industry is preparing for major regulatory changes set to take effect on July 22. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has released draft regulations aimed at modernizing the operation of physical casinos, marking the most significant update to these rules in years.

A key part of the new framework links the number of gaming machines a casino can offer to the size of its gaming floor. Under the proposed system, casinos with at least 280 square meters of gambling space can operate up to 80 machines, including Category B, C, and D types.

The number of machines allowed increases with more floor space but is capped at a maximum ratio of five machines per gaming table. This model replaces previously fixed entitlements and encourages casinos to use space more efficiently.

Another significant change allows converted casino venues to offer on-site sports betting for the first time. This opens up a new revenue stream for operators and allows them to compete more directly with sportsbooks and online betting platforms. Casinos already connected to affiliate networks may find expanded opportunities to promote betting services both in-house and through partnerships.

The regulations also close a loophole by requiring all casinos, including converted premises, to clearly mark table gaming areas in their official premises plans. This ensures consistent oversight of traditional casino games and other games of equal chance.

Casinos in Northern Ireland, which currently operate under a separate legal system, are watching the developments closely. While the changes don’t apply there directly, industry leaders believe they could influence future policy in the region.

The government plans to review the impact of the new rules within five years, with ongoing assessments to follow. Although the regulations are still in draft form, the structure appears set, and casino operators are now preparing to align their operations with the upcoming standards.
