Governor Josh Green wants to use gambling to help fund a new stadium

Hawaii Governor Josh Green has expressed openness to the idea of legalized gambling as discussions continue about funding the Aloha Stadium Entertainment District project. While he has not taken a firm stance, Green acknowledged that public opinion is shifting, with a recent poll indicating that nearly 70% of residents support gaming if the revenue is directed toward essential projects like housing. The conversation comes as state lawmakers weigh potential funding sources to support the redevelopment of the stadium site.

A state senate subcommittee recently advanced two resolutions that could impact the future of the New Aloha Stadium project. One urges the Stadium Authority to finalize a construction contract and push forward with the entertainment district.

The other proposes forming a state-led Gaming Working Group to explore the potential for legalized gambling. Supporters believe introducing gaming at the site could help close funding gaps, especially as the state looks for ways to generate additional revenue.

Green stated that while the legislature remains cautious, public sentiment is leaning toward supporting gambling if it directly benefits housing initiatives. He also noted that a significant portion of the Native Hawaiian community appears to favor the idea, provided that the funds are used to address housing needs. The governor emphasized that, regardless of the outcome of the gaming discussions, the stadium project must proceed, with contracts set to be finalized by June.

The plan aims to replace the outdated Aloha Stadium with a modern facility, part of a broader redevelopment effort. Green mentioned that the state has already secured $400 million for demolition but hopes to attract private investment to reach the estimated $800 million needed for the project. The goal is to have the new stadium ready for the 2028 University of Hawaii football season, but the state must sign construction contracts by June to maintain funding.
