Cardrooms are expected to submit compliance plans soon, while the lawsuit seeks to delay or block enforcement

The California Gaming Association has filed a lawsuit in an effort to stop new gambling regulations set to affect cardrooms across the state. The legal challenge targets rules approved by the California Office of Administrative Law and introduced by the California Department of Justice.

At the center of the dispute are changes that would restrict how certain table games are offered. The rules aim to eliminate traditional blackjack formats in cardrooms and require tighter rotation of the player-dealer role. These adjustments would mainly impact venues operating outside of tribal casinos, where different regulations apply.

Cardroom operators argue that these games are a major source of income and that the new rules could severely hurt business. Leaders at properties such as Casino M8trix say the changes could lead to widespread job losses. Concerns have been raised about the impact on workers, many of whom rely on these positions as their primary income.

Local officials are also speaking out about the potential financial consequences. The San Jose City Council has warned that millions in annual tax revenue could be at risk. That funding supports key services, including police, fire departments, and emergency response systems, making the issue larger than just the gaming industry.

Supporters of the regulations say the goal is to improve oversight and address concerns tied to gambling practices. Critics, however, believe the approach may create unintended problems for both businesses and communities. The debate reflects a long-running tension between state regulators and cardroom operators in the Golden State.

The rules are scheduled to take effect soon, though full implementation will take time.
