The backing could signal renewed positive momentum for the bill
The long-awaited legalization of casinos in Brazil might be edging closer to reality. A recent meeting between Senator Irajá Silvestre, Rapporteur of the Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ), and Finance Minister Fernando Haddad has yielded significant support for Bill 2,234/22, which proposes legalizing and regulating casinos in the country.
Silvestre, a vocal advocate for casino legalization, emphasized the economic and social benefits it could bring. He pointed to evidence-based studies indicating that legalized casinos could generate roughly 22 million Brazilian Real (approximately £3.2 million) annually through taxes. Additionally, he referenced other countries that successfully legalized and regulated casinos, highlighting the creation of jobs, increased tourism, and additional tax revenue.
“Minister,” Silvestre stated, “it is not possible that the whole world is wrong and only Brazil is right. These countries that made the legalization and regulation with responsibility set an end to illegal gambling and clandestine gambling… And they created a new business environment in the countries, generating employment, income, and doubling the number of tourists who began to visit these countries.”
Haddad’s response echoed these sentiments. He acknowledged that most developed economies, including all OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) countries and the vast majority of G20 nations, have already embraced regulated casino industries. He emphasized the potential for job creation and economic growth, provided proper regulations and safeguards are in place.
This signifies a potentially significant shift in the national conversation surrounding casino legalization. While the path forward may still involve hurdles and discussions, the Finance Minister’s support adds considerable weight to the legalization movement. Brazil’s citizens will undoubtedly be following future developments with keen interest, as the prospect of legalized casinos draws closer.
