Legislation to bring back casinos and other forms of gambling are on the table
Brazil’s Constitution and Justice Commission has delayed voting on legalizing casinos, bingos, horse racing, and jogo do bicho. The postponement was influenced by the bench, which opposed the measure. As per the leaders’ agreement, Senator Irajá has arranged a public hearing to examine the issue.
Irajá supports the Bill and emphasizes that “it has the potential to transform tourism in Brazil, with the possibility of investments of R$45 billion (US$ 8.9 billion) and the generation of almost 200 thousand direct jobs. Tax collection should reach R$18 billion (US$3.55 bn), boosting the economy.”
Bill 2,234/2022 allows casino development in tourist centers or hotels with at least 100 rooms that offer meeting venues, bars, restaurants, and cultural activities. The legislation also approves developing casinos in each state and Federal District, except for Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Amazonas, and Pará, which are permitted up to two venues, and São Paulo, with up to three casinos.
The public hearing will be held on Thursday, May 9, at 10:00 AM. Several individuals with a vast understanding of the issue plan to attend and share their opinions on legalizing gambling in Brazil. Â
Among these are Manoel Cardoso Linhares, President of the Brazilian Association of the Hotel Industry; Alex Pariente, Vice President of casino and hotel operations at Hard Rock International; Doreni Caramoni, President of the Association of Event Promoters; Thiago Borges, Vice President of the Brazilian Association of Resorts, and inspection and regulation expert Guilherme LuÃs Dias.
