A new bill takes queues from other countries that are limiting online gambling advertising
Argentina National Deputy Eduardo Toniolli has recently proposed a new bill seeking only to allow digital gambling and online betting advertising that targets adults who have already consented to receive them. Overall, the bill aims to create a safer and more responsible gambling environment for all individuals in the country and protect minors from exposure to gambling content.Â
The bill has the potential to substantially change the way gambling and online betting services are marketed and promoted across the country. Twenty-six additional members of the Union for the Homeland party backed and endorsed the proposal.
“We aim to limit the presence of online gambling in our daily lives, especially in the lives of young people and adolescents, who now have immediate access through virtual wallets – at any time and from anywhere – to platforms that can lead them to compulsive behaviors, with serious consequences for their future development,” said Toniolli.
The bill was motivated by current debates about restricting gambling advertising in various European countries. Toniolli referred to new laws implemented in the Netherlands that “distinguishes between non-targeted advertising, reaching a mass audience regardless of age, and online targeted advertising, which can be directed to a specific audience.”
“Following that distinction, we propose to prohibit the former (preventing advertising in public spaces, at sports events, in mass media, or openly on social networks) and allow the latter, restricting it to the virtual realm, as long as it is targeted exclusively at adults who have given their prior consent,” added Toniolli.
The proposal also includes steps to control gambling debt by prohibiting users from using credit and debit cards to deposit funds at online gambling sites.
