The move is the latest of several made as the agency rethinks its cryptocurrency approach

The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has officially closed its investigation into Coinbase. The news marks a significant shift in the regulatory landscape for the cryptocurrency industry.

The decision comes as the SEC has been scaling back its enforcement actions against several crypto firms, including prominent names like Crypto.com, Robinhood, and Gemini. Coinbase, one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the US, had been under scrutiny by the SEC for potential violations, but no legal action will be taken against the company at this time.

This move comes amid changes in leadership at the SEC. Since Mark Uyeda became the acting chair in January, there has been a noticeable shift in the commission’s stance towards cryptocurrency regulation.

Under the previous leadership of Gary Gensler, the SEC had issued several Wells notices and conducted aggressive investigations into crypto platforms. However, with the new leadership in place, the SEC appears to be adopting a more balanced and supportive approach.

In the case of Crypto.com, the SEC had issued a Wells notice last August, signaling the possibility of legal action. However, following a lawsuit filed by Crypto.com against the SEC in October, the investigation was ultimately closed with no further action.

This latest development is part of a broader trend of the SEC rolling back its previous enforcement actions against the crypto industry. As the regulatory environment continues to evolve, crypto companies are adapting to new guidelines that may help foster growth while ensuring compliance with US law. The closure of the Coinbase investigation is seen as a positive sign for the future of the cryptocurrency sector.
