A Canadian judge has approved the extradition of a Saskatchewan man who hacked a school’s network to mine crypto
A Saskatchewan King’s Bench judge has formally ordered the extradition of Ryan James Roach to the United States to face criminal cybercrime allegations. The legal case involves accusations that Roach illegally breached American university supercomputers to unlawfully mine digital currency.
Following the initial judicial decision, the provincial Court of Appeal granted the accused an interim release while the federal justice minister reviews the case to make a final determination. The local court clarified that this specific committal order does not establish guilt or innocence but rather confirms that the evidence presented by American prosecutors satisfies the necessary legal thresholds required under Canadian extradition law.
According to federal court records, investigators allege that Roach partnered with another Canadian citizen to compromise an educational institution based in New York during 2017. The cyberattack involved the theft of over 1,900 individual login credentials and the subsequent installation of malicious software.
The co-conspirators then allegedly leveraged the immense processing capacity of the university supercomputer to mine Electroneum, which is a specific type of cryptocurrency. The comprehensive security breach resulted in approximately $337,000 in direct damages to the academic institution due to the extensive costs of taking networks offline, performing deep forensic computer analysis and completely rebuilding the compromised digital infrastructure.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation managed to track the complex digital trail back to the suspects by analyzing server logs, associated email profiles, hosting accounts and internet protocol addresses. Although the defense argued that Roach was merely learning about the ongoing cyberattack rather than orchestrating it, the presiding judge determined that shared server payments and communication logs provided sufficient evidence of a mutual agreement.
The defense team has decided not to appeal the initial judicial order to avoid unnecessary litigation delays. The federal justice minister maintains ultimate authority over whether to officially surrender the citizen to the American prosecutors.
