Scammers are using the Strait of Hormuz closure to trick shipping companies into paying fake fees

Maritime risk experts have issued an urgent warning regarding a sophisticated cryptocurrency scam targeting vessels stranded near the Strait of Hormuz. Fraudulent actors, impersonating Iranian security officials, are contacting shipping firms to demand transit fees in exchange for guaranteed safe passage through the restricted waterway.

These deceptive messages request payments in digital assets such as Bitcoin and Tether, claiming that once a fee is settled, vessels will be cleared for unimpeded travel. Industry analysts have confirmed that these solicitations are entirely illegitimate and do not originate from official government channels in Tehran, despite the ongoing regional instability.

The emergence of this scheme coincides with a prolonged period of geopolitical tension that has effectively paralyzed one of the world’s most vital energy corridors. With the strait largely closed to commercial traffic, hundreds of tankers and thousands of seafarers remain immobilized, creating a desperate environment that opportunistic criminals are now exploiting.

The scam often involves a two-step process where victims are first asked to submit vessel documentation for an alleged eligibility assessment. Once the fake verification is complete, the scammers assign a specific cryptocurrency amount as a condition for transit, leading shipowners into a trap that offers no actual security.

The consequences of falling for these fraudulent demands extend beyond simple financial loss. Maritime security firms believe that at least one vessel may have already been lured into a dangerous situation by these messages, reportedly facing gunfire after attempting to move under the false impression of pre-clearance.

Furthermore, legal experts warn that attempting to pay these fees could inadvertently trigger severe international sanctions, as any perceived financial support to restricted entities carries heavy penalties.
