The breach may have impacted as many as 27,000 Bitcoin Depot customers
Bitcoin Depot, a well-known operator of crypto ATMs, has only recently informed its customers about a data breach, despite the fact that it occurred over a year ago. The breach, which took place on June 23, 2024, exposed the private information of nearly 27,000 customers. The company disclosed the breach in a notice to state attorneys general in Maine and Massachusetts, revealing that 26,732 users were affected by what it described as an “external system breach.”
The company explained that federal law enforcement had asked them to delay the notification process, citing an ongoing investigation into the third party responsible for the breach. Bitcoin Depot was cleared to notify the affected individuals only after the investigation concluded in mid-June 2025.
According to the notice, the exposed data included customer names, phone numbers, driver’s license numbers, and possibly other details such as addresses, birth dates, and email addresses. However, Bitcoin Depot assured its customers that there was “no evidence of misuse” of the exposed information. The company emphasized its commitment to protecting user data and privacy.
To mitigate any potential risks, Bitcoin Depot advised affected customers to monitor their credit reports, report suspicious activities, and take preventive measures such as creating fraud alerts or placing security freezes with credit agencies.
The company first detected unusual activity on its network in June 2024 and launched an investigation with a leading cybersecurity firm. The investigation confirmed that unauthorized access to personal customer data had occurred, and the company has since enhanced its security measures to prevent future breaches. Bitcoin Depot has also been cooperating with law enforcement in handling the situation.
This breach adds to a growing list of similar incidents within the crypto and tech industries, with other companies like Byte Federal and Coinbase also facing security challenges in recent months.
